Some days we feel as though we are faced by life’s challenges and difficulties. A loss of a loved one, poverty, emotional distress, illness, losing a home from natural disasters, the list goes on. There are a number of reasons why Allah the Almighty allows hardship to befall on us. Even the genuine believers experience hardship at some stage in their lives in accordance with His wisdom and plan.

When one faces hardship and tribulation, they should see the brighter side and see it as a blessing in disguise. There are a number of reasons why Allah allows hardship and adversity to befall on us. Even the genuine believers experience hardship at some stage in their lives in accordance to His plans. He tests us in order to make us better and stronger believers.

No calamity occurs, but by the permission of Allah, and whosover believes in Allah, He guides his heart. And Allah is the All-Knower of everything. [64:11]

1. It is a test of faith

Allah does not place a burden on a soul, greater than they can bear. Some people are capable of enduring much more hardship than others, and Allah will test people according to what’s within their strength to handle.

It is His design to put the believers through hardship to test our faith. We must maintain our trust that only He can relieve us from hardship. Maintain our prayer and talk to Him. Pour your heart out to no one but Him.

2. A reminder for us to be grateful

When we feel like we are on top of the world, we have everything: our health, wealth, happiness. Sometimes, we do not give thanks and show that we appreciate and that we are, indeed, grateful. When calamity falls on us, it reminds us that we should not take the good things in our lives for granted. When we lose what we have, we see it as a difficult time. It is a reminder for us to be grateful.

If you count God’s blessings, you can never encompass them. Indeed, the human being is transgressing, unappreciative. (14:34)

3. Remembering Allah SWT

Our life’s trials are an effective reminder for those who are too absorbed in this dunya, the worldly life. They may not be as devoted to Allah as they should be. When we are too preoccupied with what the world offers and do not remember what actually matters; that is, the hereafter, they tend to lose focus and not seek Him nor call on Him as we should.

Going through suffering is completely normal and brings us closer to Allah. We cry and call out to Allah because only He can bring us up again. If the most loved person of Allah can face such difficulties, who are we to seek a life of comfort without any challenges? Make more time for ibadah: prayers and the remembrance of Allah and He will make all your affairs easy and increase your patience.

If the most loved person of Allah can face such difficulties, who are we to seek life of comfort without any challenges.

For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. [94: 5-6]
